Just heard this in movie Hangover II. Inspired lyrics by Billy Joel express the sadness of what regulations have done to a way of life. Having relatives in Provincetown , one who owned his dragger back in the 70's when the fleet was large, this song is a testimonial to those proud fisherman who carry on the tradition.

In my opinion, this is the best song Billy ever wrote, and it is also my favorite song. Coming from the daughter of a fisherman, I can really see what has been happening to the fisherman of Long Island, the place where I've grown up. Long Island is being taken over my industrialization and tourism, and if we Islanders don't do something soon, the local fishermen and their culture will be lost to us forever. I thank Billy for writing such an amzing song with such a powerful message. Long live the Piano Man
  • An anthem to the coastal fishermen

The first time I heard this song and saw the video, I was running an aerial gunnery exercise at Rodriguez Range just south of the North/South Korea border. It has stuck in my mind ever since, not just because of where I first heard it, but because it is an anthem to professionals who find it harder and harder to make a living from their work. Musically, the rhythm of the song harmonizes with the waves crashing on the shore, and the black and white video with scenes of fishermen in harbor and out on the water emphasizes the meaning of the song. Listening to the song and watching the video, it is hard to not get caught up in the fate of these classic Americans.

I watched "The Hangover 2" today and heard this song for the first time and I got chills. I came home to find that it's Billy Joel. What a beautiful & profound song for a moving like the hangover but it was well placed.

This song and video rock. I live on long island and I know all the places he sings about. It's sad that the federal government is making it hard to fish here.

Although I am young and this song came out nearly a decade ago, I really enjoy it and appreciate the honest clean lyrics. This song has a sea legend romance about it while also being very informative about what some people do as a living. I absoulutely love "The Down-Easter Alexa" and if you do too, push yes on if this review was helpful. Awesome job, Billy Joel!
