Reviews

  • Exotica's Best

    5
    By Dr Vornoff
This is my favorite exotica collection that focuses on a single artist. To my ears, what makes Baxter's exotica better than that of his contemporaries is his use of top-notch rhythm ensembles that can find a real groove and play together with feel. Even the compositions where drums are not prominent benefit from a confident and cohesive rhythm section. Of course, I also enjoy the rich orchestral ambience and impressionism melded with just a wee bit of kitsch. The tracks also sound well-recorded and mixed (perhaps due to the resources of Capitol Records). Definitely recommended.
