The more I listen, the more I like Chris Thile’s Bach and am convinced by his musicality. That being said, the nature of the articulation using a pick is quite consistent and doesn’t appear to allow the variety of touch variation that a bowed instrument can give. It took a while for me to be able listen to this on it’s own terms. Note: The Editor’ is mistaken in writing that this is Chris Thile’s arrangement of this music: I have known this music from having practiced it for many years and he is playing it as written.

I've been a devoted Thile fan since I first caught Nickel Creek on Austin City Limits several years ago. Later, I saw the Punch Brothers on the same program; I recognized the engaging Mr. Thile immediately. Soon, I had to order everything the PBs created. I have all Thile's collaborations, as well as his solo works. I'm surprised the tracks don't wear out, since they're the most played item in my library. Last year, a friend and I felt blessed to see Thile perform live twice in a few months, first with jazz pianist Brad Mehldau at the Mahaiwe, an intimate theatre in Gt. Barrington, MA, then at Tanglewood with the fabulous Goat Rodeo Sessions. His live performances take one to a another dimension; Thile's ability to cross all manner of genre proves utterly captivating. In an age of autotuners and lip-synchers just phoning it in, his passion for music proves infectious. As someone who studied the piano with a mainly classical teacher, I have long adored Bach, so hearing Thile play the grand master's works has certainly been a treat. I will add this collection to my ever-expanding Thile pantheon of pure pleasure. I anticipate many soothing hours of Bach/Thile nirvana. I can hardly wait for Vol. 2.

As a Juilliard graduate in violin, I must say this album is quite an accomplishment. Big kudos go to Chris Thile. This unique and creative way of cross-instrumentation is genius for such a complex work, no less Bach. Definitely an added listening suggestion (rhythmic precision is uncanny) for any young violinist first learning this piece.
  • Apart from skills or innovation, missing out on what's truly important

Music is suppose to please and give pleasure to the ears, "beautiful" lets put it. From someone who is accustomed to hear classical music, even though I tried to enjoy it, as much as I tried to enjoy the good parts of it such as techniques and innovation, I just cannot stand to listen any longer. There is something that's killing the harmony, it's like something prickly stinging your mind. No offence to the instrument or the musician himself, don't be too innovative next time, this kind of combo just doesn't work the harmony doesn't come out!!

Great album. If you gave it one star then you did not comprehend it. Also, considering these songs are not normally played by a mandolin it makes it even more impressive and interesting.

Snark is never a good look, people. I'm a violinist and a mandoinist. These are ADAPATIONS of violin peices....the physical and stylistic differences between the instruments ensure that these are gonna sound different from other treatments. Are you expecting Thile to mimic a violinist's approach to this? Give me a break. Great stuff.
