It's a testament to this albums perfection how short many of the songs are. They average under three minutes, but they are like perfect diamonds of songwriting and performance. There is no need for solos or even bridges in this rarified example of the craft, only concise, whole statements. And the sweeping arc of the subject matter encapsulates the American experience with 'Sail Away' and 'Political Science', and the human/god relationship is beautifully bookended by the poignant 'He Gives Us All His Love' and the darkly humorous 'Gods Song'. And the climax, 'You Can Leave Your Hat On' is huge but so relaxed. A must-have.

My favorite from America's underappreciated songwriters. To the reviewer that commented on the album cover - the original LP cover was sideways, iTunes has it right
10 Stars!!!!!!

This is 10 Star stuff; not 5 star.
I hate to chide, but this whole cultural amnesia/cultural ignorance/that was before my time stuff has really gotten old, kids. Wake up! Pay attention! For heaven's sake Beethoven was before my time and I am thoroughly conversant with (and appreciative of) his music.
Wonderfully Increadible

Wow, I never thought of Randy Newman as being such a wonderful songwriter (both lyrically and musically), just some guy who wrote movie music and had an unusual voice. This album proved me wrong, every song is a gem, but my favorites have to by Sail Away and the hilarious Political Science, which may be a lesson for our times. This album is a must buy for anyone who loves great music, especially first time listeners.
Wit and wisdom.

Randy sounds even better on this remastered disc. His wit is always a bright spot in a somewhat dreary world we live in. Thirty year old songs are as appropriate today as ever. Political science is sounding better and better.
Gotta Love it

Rather, my personal favorite.
Every song is right- from the sleezy You Can Leave Your Hat On, to the playful Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear: this is Randy at his peak, in his youth, doing what he does best, making use of a limited instrument: his voice.
Highly recommended. So much so that Harry Nilsson sung several of thes, with Randy playin' piano for him.
Now- if iTunes could simply turn the album cover ninety degrees to the left (that is to say: right-side-up), it'd look more professional.
