Well this showed me something. John Petrucci is a much better vocalist than James Labrie! He doesn't copy Geddy Lee of Rush! No offense to James. . .
  • Great, but thats not actually Petrucci

Petrucci's version is not just him, he is using auto-tune on the chorus, which levels out the voice. He does have a nice voice though.

This is a STEAL at five dollars. Sure there is already the original "Wither" track, but the other variations are great. 1. Wither paino version: I love this version of the song. It takes what already was an epic song to begin with, and makes it even more epic. There really isn't much to say about this one, it's just amazing. 2. Wither John Petrucci: I think that it is awsome that JP recorded this song with him singing. After all, it is "his" song. JP is a very good singer, and he pulls this off very good. 3. Best of Time Mike Portnoy: Believe it or not, this is my favorite part of this album. I know that the EP is called "Wither", and most likely would elude to the fact that there is only going to be variations of said song, but they (and by "they" I mean the nice people at RoadRunner) put this variation in as well. It actually somewhat makes sense if you think about it. JP got to sing "his" song, so now Mike gets to sing "his" song. Ok, enough rambiling, this song I think is actually BETTER with Mike singing it. I don't really care if you people think Mike has a bad voice, bla bla bla. Lemmy has a rather bad voice, but he just fits into his band. The same thing here. Yes, Mike may not sing quite as well as James or John, but this song is emotional to him and his father, it just makes sense when you hear it, espiacially if you know the backround to the song. This song in itself is worth five dollars to me.
  • Epic and finally here!

As DT said, this was the second single of BC&SL so i wondered where it was. Well now I know! Wither (album version) 5/5 Already heard it, nothing new, but still a great ballad. leans towards pop however. Wither (Rudess & labrie duet)7/5 Best on the EP. soothing and very epic. Wither (JP vocals) 2/5 well...he definetly deserves it for writing the song, but it really isn't great. The best of times (Mp vocals)5/5 Again, well deserved for MP but a lot better than the JP wither. Only problem is poor Mike Portnoy can't get his voice as high as labrie's, but then again no 1 can. Still luv the orignal though, but I can get this for cheaper! (on account of i'm not buying all of bc&sl!) Great single, worth 3 of the 5 dollars
  • Interesting.

Several versions of Wither...it's not really necessary, but it's a nice icing on the cake for DT's new album. Wither's Piano version is just as beautiful as the original, if not more. But really...James is the vocalist. That implies that he should be the one singing.
  • Great music!... But auto-tune?... Say it ain't so...

I have loved Dream Theater for thirteen years now. They are easily my favorite band. But I am not a fan that is in denial about some of their shortcomings. James Labrie has had problems with his voice over the years, stemming mainly from a food poisoning-induced vocal rupture that was never able to heal properly. Despite that, and actually all the more due to that, I think he is an incredible singer, not to mention brave for not throwing in the towel. I gave this release three stars because they used auto-tune on his vocal track in the piano version of "Wither" (I'm surprised none of the reviews so far have caught it). At, "leaves me paralyzed. Tear it out again", you can hear the sudden "Kanye"-esque crack to the rigidly correct note that I would expect to hear in a Jamie Foxx song (which musically serves its purpose in that context, as it's used intentionally as a musical device to the sound of the song). In this case, it just seemed like they were trying to get away with a few pitchy notes that either weren't that bad, or could have been worked out in a few more takes. To the powers that be, I realize Labrie's voice has had its problems, but I will take the organic sound of his flaws over the artificially polished sound of pitch correction. I hope the buck didn't stop with Portnoy on that call, as many things in that band do (P.S. Portnoy is still my idol, but nonetheless human). Also, on that same note, Petrucci's vocals on the song are absolutely meaningless, because the auto-tuning on his track is blaringly obvious, and all over the track. He's an incredible guitar player and a really nice guy (from what I know of him, that is), but he can't really carry a tune. On background vocals, he's always a little flat or sharp, especially live, but on background vocals that doesn't really matter. To those that say Petrucci should sing a track on the next album, I strongly disagree, unless he gets the tune right on his own merit after countless takes. And Portnoy? Wonderful drummer and musician, one of the best there ever was. Not a singer. I did not even purchase that song, as I have heard enough of him on their official releases to get an idea of what it would sound like. Again, as a background vocalist, you don't need to be that great a singer, especially when you're playing another instrument (incredibly, I might add). The piano track is nonetheless incredible. I really enjoyed hearing a more pulled back and subtle Rudess. I like when he's soft, but musically complex in ways that are more sublime and not so flashy. I guess my overall feeling is that Dream Theater has one voice, and please don't tamper with that voice. This concludes my really thick compliment sandwich.
  • its good, but not great

Wither was written to be dt's second single on blackclouds, the first being "passage". I enjoyed this album with its way of suprise. I never JP could sing as good as he does. The piano version is beautiful, the way james' voice blends withe piano, sounding almost operatic. I am a drummer and Mike is my idol, but his voice is NOT meant to lead. He's better doing background vocals with James in the spotlight. This album will not dissapoint. Just do what i did and buy the JP and piano versions only because Mikes voice isnt good in best of times and, duh, Wither is on Black clouds. I want to hear JP sing at least one song by himself on the next album. Thay guy can sing!

Releasing alternate versions is a great way to give fans additional ear candy and these new versions do not disappoint. Well done!

Yes, it is way different than the usual DT stuff, but it is great to know that these guys can play more than just metal. Most metal musicians don't have a clue how to be emotional in their music, and DT shows just how possible it is. I love the heavy stuff more than anyone, but listening to the piano/vocal version in my listening room is simply amazing. Thanks to DT for showing us what REAL musicianship is all about!
