they are crappy in the recording studio. wonderful music, but somehow the energy is not communicated in the studio albums.

This album is not Junta, Rift, or Nectar. The songs are simpler (excluding Time Turns Elastic), catchier, and much more likely to attract a mainstream audience than their earlier works. But you know what? That's okay. I appreciate the fact that the band changes, and is not writing the same five songs over and over again. The music still comes from the heart. Sugar Shack is the best song, in my opinion. Not a fan of Joy (the song), but I guess you can't please everyone. Time Turns Elastic, and Stealing Time are other strong ones.

I put Joy into the same world as Round Room and Undermind. Joy continues the mature Phish vibe. You can really tell Trey is reflecting on life and celebrating it hardcore. I'm not ready to put this into the hall of fame with Rift and Nectar, but come on, it's Phish, it jams, and Backwards Down The Number Line is alone worth the purchase.
  • Great album!

This was an amazing phish album. It disappointed many fans by not having the same jammy, prolonged, and funky feel as the other great works of phish. Its up there with "Undermind" in the ranking of discography, being phenominal songwriting and catchy tunes but lacking the typical phish style. The band is definately growing up and starting to write *songs* instead of jams. But to many phish fans you have to see the live to experience the full effect. Though untypical of phish, it is possibly one of their best peices yet. I would recommend to anyone, and if you are a phollower it is essential.

They didn't even put the best new song of the tour on the album. I think you could have replaced title track "Joy" with "Alaska." The titled track blows!
  • its awesome to have them back!
