I was in high school whn this was originally released. In fact, I won a copy by being the 8th caller on a radio show when I was supposed to be eating dinner with the family. I went to the station to pick up the LP and listened to it right away--changed my life , not to mention the direction my musical tastes went spinning off to.....

I used to have this in my acid muddled play list in the early seventies, Steely Dan,Yes, Tull, Return to Forever, Pink Floyd. I don’t regret the "time out of mind" with my koss pro4 aa headphones and this album….still impresses me. Just make sure no one is home when you crank that awesome stereo system with this band. Not everyone gets it!
  • A most excellent album

Excellent jazz/rock fusion from when the genre was still budding. This band spawned four famous musical careers, but the legends started with this album. Unusual time signatures and a blending of varied musical textures hallmark this pivotal album, but... You HAVE to hear it to appreciate how weak my praise is compared to the tonal mastery and unbelievable musicianship. Enjoy!

If you have not heard this, you have not experienced music in its true form.
  • One of the best of the early '70's fusion era

BUY this album! This is a terrific example of the fusion era of the early '70's and features some of the best musicians you'll ever hear. This is one of the must-haves of the era, along with Return to Forever's "No Mystery" and "Where Have I Known You Before", and the Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Visions of the Emerald Beyond", which, unfortunately, is not available here. Actually, I think "Visions" is an ever better album than "Birds", just an amazing aural treat (good stereo at home? CRANK IT!!). For those of you who don't have any familiarity with the genre or the bands, give them a listen, they will not disappoint. While they may not please traditional jazz or rock listeners, they have plenty to offer fans of both that want to hear something with a richness, depth and complexity not found in pop tunes, and have the musicianship of the best of traditional jazz, along with the occassional scorching guitar solo. Another of RTF's albums that is outstanding is "Romantic Warrior" and don't forget to select some Weather Report and Billy Cobham as well.

After listening to this album for the first time, I was left absolutely speechless…. Expletives and bouts of hysterical laughter are the only way that I can describe the majestic array of sound that just found its way into my ear canals. Bless you Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Upon seeing this album ranked in the 50 albums that built prog rock, I had to check it out. The energy displayed by the musicians and their obvious talent makes this a great listen, whether you are a fan of jazz or not. I can definitely see the progressive elements in the music that earned this recording a place on the list. I especially enjoy the track One Word. It is almost 10 minutes long, but only seems to be a couple of minutes long when you listen to it. Didn't enjoy the song Open Country Joy as much, but it was still okay. J

This album just passed my 3-buy test. I bought it when it came out, on vinyl, replaced it on cassette, and now bought it on mp3, and no regrets. Yes, I gave it a vacation during the CD era, but it's back now, baby.
