I was all happy when DT came out with Chaos In Motion. Now don't get me wrong, I liked all the songs. When I listened to In The Presence Of Enemies, since that is my FAVORITE DT song, I was highly dissatisfied with James's vocals. I DID NOT LIKE HIS VOICE WHEN HE SANG THIS SONG!!!!!!!! When he sang ITPOE on Systematic Chaos I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!! HIS VOICE WAS LIKE HE WAS FROM HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!! But as soon as he sang, my eyes literally melted from my sockets!!!!!!!!!!!
  • James ruins otherwise great stuff.

Sorry. I'm a DT fan. But, I can't just give this high marks because the musicians are stellar. Based on other Live DT- this is bad. Ruined by James shot vocals. I got this because Surrounded was supposed to be a must have because of JPs great extended solos. Forget it- I can't stomache the high pitched mumblesof James. I really think JL forgot the lyrics and just screeched the melody from the mid to the end on Surrounded- killed what could of been a highlight. Lines in the Sand is great and made it to the playlist. Panic, In the presence & Schmedley pretty good as well. But nothing near as great as Score or Live Scenes. Get those instead. Real shame that one players craft can overshadow an otherwise awesome collection of musicianship. I almost wish they would pull a KISS trick and go back and overdub some vocals so the rest wouldn't go to waste. Sorry James ...

I have been a DT fan since they formed back in the mid 80's. I own every album, and this live set is a great addition to my collection. These guys are top notch musicians, often thought of as a musicians band because of the difficulty in trying to comprehend the arrangements these guys come up with. They manage to be cutting edge without being redundant. Since they took over their own production and engineering, the music has gotten better, more involved, and more personal. These guys are incredible! If you haven't heard them before, be prepared to listen to outrageously progressive music with balls and chunk like no other band can deliver!

Constant motion and panic attack, 2 non-stop rock songs, perfect opener. next blind faith, love it. Then some good songs fr a while. Then, The ministry of lost souls, mastered well, along with In the presence of enemies, an amazing epic song. And schmedly wilcox, like the instrumedly, but with lyrical songs, And every song ended an album. This was an amazing medley, It openswith Trial of tears (end of falling into infinity) with an overture extended by about 5 minutes, which made it a 7minute overture. Then finally free, which ended metropolis pt 2. After that is an instrumental version of a segment in learning to live, which ended Images and words. Then, if possible, an even harder version of a segment of in the name of god, which ended Train of thought. Then what ended the massive 24:00 octavarium and the album octavarium, ended the 21:18 epic medly, which was Razor's Edge.

I do agree that James' vocals are starting to escape him, but also figure that some of you are possibly comparing to his studio albums. You figure that sometimes the artists will "cheat" on studio albums to cover up those little imperfections. Live is another story. It's one take, and that's it. You can't fix that. Also, look at Forsaken. Does that not sound EXACTLY like it does on the video? I do agree that this is not exactly perfect, nor should it be marked as such. Figure also that these guys are going on 20+ yrs. of being a band. That definetly takes a toll on certain people; this may be a sign of James LaBrie's vocals maturing. Who knows? Maybe James' was just having a bad day. And everyone has one at some point, right guys? Wait for the next album. You'll all see, things will definetly be different. P.S. 80% of the album's tracks are album only because they are really long. This CD, however, shouldn't cost $16.00. Hey, I'll buy it anyway.
  • The Ultimate Gift From DT To Their Fans (So Far)

With the latest set from Dream Theater Chaos In Motion 2007-2008 the band gives their fans the ultimate gift by putting two DVDs and three CDs together for the most comprehensive overview of their music to date in a live setting. I grabbed this gem the day it came out and later discovered the concert date I attended in Boston in 2007 makes a few appearances on the set, which makes this experience all that more personal and special for this listener. I was able to attend another concert early in 2008 and bring along my young son, a Petrucci disciple, and he thought seeing DT live was the most amazing thing he has ever seen. Thanks to the graciousness of Jordan Rudess and making these dreams come true, I continue to enjoy watching the development and legacy of DT grow with each passing year. Chaos In Motion 2007-2008 is a lot to digest and after you are finished watching all the live footage, interviews and bonuses, then heard all three CDs, you certainly have the feeling you were just given the grand tour and history of a band. DT is at the point where a presentation such as this will be more commonplace because of their hard earned and well-deserved success. I recently spoke to their former manager Jim Putulski, and as we were discussing Jim’s latest new label Blistering Records, the mention of the work ethic of DT came up and he intimated that if more bands held that belief closer to their heart that success would be unavoidable. At the beginning of the first DVD, there are some questionable videos in reference to quality however, that is something that is more of an anomaly. Once you get past those rare instances, this is superb and it covers much of the output from this band. As the back of the box set says, “1 year & 1 day, 115 shows, 105 cities, 35 countries, 5 continents, hundreds of thousands of fans…1 Band” puts this entire event into proper perspective. The enormity of presence that DT commands finds a time capsule to fit into within this one sentence. The promo videos and live screen projection films are also a highlight and very enjoyable. With “Behind The Chaos On The Road” segments, Mike Portnoy’s tour of the stage prior to a show is an entirely different look from the band’s eyes that we rarely get to see. As I mentioned previously, this set is all encompassing and I do not think very much is missing. The total DT experience is available here, including life on the road and all the people that make things happen along the way from the bus driver to the cooks, people that seldom get the recognition they deserve. This band is proud of its legacy and is always willing to give credit where it is due and that is why I respect them so much. Success has not changed their outlook, just made all of them more grateful for the current position they hold in music today. It is hard to imagine how a DVD/CD box set could get much better than this although I have a feeling what is in the future will be yet another notch higher than this. DT is always looking to improve and this is a great way to see how this band has grown in every way by watching the DVDs. If you want to compare, contrast, and see how just how far they have come over the years, check out the double feature DVD Images and Words Live in Tokyo/5 Years in a Livetime, proceed to check out Chaos In Motion 2007-2008, and then watch the amazing progression of a band in one sitting. Musically, DT are exceedingly talented, but James' vocals are horrible these days. And this new musical direction is irritating. Train of Thought was the beginning of this era. I seriously hope they revert back to something actually melodic instead of another album of heavy metal wankery.

I had the pleasure of seeing DT on this tour with Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, and Three. I was amazed with the show and amazed with this album. Live albums are usually dissapointing but DT add elements to their live show that are not captured in the studio. Essential for long time fans or a good place to start for newcomers.

You'd probably need to shut down and reboot if you were asked to play any DT song too =p
