  • Johnny still in rare form

Johnny's voice still delivers after all of these years. It is unfortunate that the orchestration does not live up to his pipes. This is true of many of the mature vocalists. Nancy Wilson also comes to mind. We came to love these artists with lush, full orchestration musical arrangements and now because they are not flavor of the month artists, the labels are not giving the budget for the musical backup these artists deserve. Johnny's voice is still a pleasure, only it would have been a much fuller experience with a full calorie, full fat meal of an orchestra rather than "lite" backgrounds with half the fat and half the calories. Make em do you justice next time John. Thanks.

They just don't make albums like this anymore? or do they. It's hard to believe that Mathis still sounds this good. This is the kind of mood album that you can play all night. You know all the songs, but they never sounded so fresh and new. The voice , the voice, not since some of the classic Sinatra albums has a recording been so seemless in it's intent. That intent is to put you in the mood for love. A Night To Remember, is a CD you will remember for a long , long time. Or should i say, until the Twelth of Never.

Just picked the new album up yesterday. It shouldn't surprise me that my musical hero is in fine form here. I want a quick follow-up album soon. The last song with gladys Knight took me by complete suprise. But of these artists started in the 1950's!!! It inspires me to see people get better with age and that is the case for Mr. Mathis. Please do a show at BAM in Brooklyn...please.

Wow! If these are truly recent recordings, then Johnny's voice has become better with age, and you can't say that about many singers. Smooth, clear and sexy. He sings what you want to say to your lover. This is the perfect CD to play when you want to propose or renew a romance. After all, the CD is called "A Night to Remember," even though that isn't it's best number. Start out with "How 'Bout Us", segue into "We're in This Love Together" (I thought the sax was going to overcome Johnny's voice, but it turned out to be a nice balance.), and further into "You Make Me Feed Brand New." Rating on the tracks: 1, 2, 4, 9, 10 are simply GREAT; 3, 5 and 6 - here Johnny takes on female legends and gives us really smooth renditions, perhaps better than the original artists; 7 - the beat keeps this alive, and it is probably the weakest on the CD; 8 and 12 - Johnny tends to underplay his female vocalists and these two ladies may have not been the best choice for the songs. I started out buying only a couple of tracks, liked what I heard, and decided the price was worth the entire CD, so I bought it all . Even with the above drawbacks on a couple of tracks, it Johnny stills deserves the highest rating!
