The Royal Philharmonic has impressed me in many of their recordings with a very pleasing, full-bodied sound. I find Slatikin's interpretation of Holt's 'The Planets" to further this impression with a well balanced and fairly articulate rendition. As far as tonal quality and phrasing go I found it to be well executed; however I did notice in their recording of Jupiter that the principal trumpet had a few rough notes through several of the brass fanfares. All in all I found it to be a decent performance with few detractors. I have compared numerous recordings of this suite and have yet to find an equal to Sir Colin Davis' recording with the London Symphony, and yes I have listened to Simon Rattle's go with the Berlin Philharmonic.
