  • Good but not the best version

The original case album is the best - the original London production. This pales in comparison.

The original cast recording is the only one worth owning. The performances are superb in this quinticential Sondheim musical. If you own no other album of a musical make it this one.
  • Quite simply, the best modern musical ever written

The title says everything. Being as amazing as it is, Sondheim's masterpiece is an *acquired* taste. If you love it the first time through - in fact if you love any compilations of modern songs the very first time through, well, for me, those songs get old fast - they turn bubblegum. The timelessness of the book speaks for itself. The musical form he is competing with himself in Sunday in the Park With George, the 2d best musical ever and Lloyd-Weber's *original* Evita with LuPone and Potimkin. And yes, I've been laughed at for this: Lloyd Weber's Reqiem. That's where I go to church - people who laugh at it won't like Sondheim. Why? These men have an extraordinary gift of *melody* creativity. As Pat Metheny, my favorite jazz composer and musician, these writers are the rare breed that come up with a melody first - then they harmonize. There's having it and there's having it. As a harmonic vertical player myself, I know that harmonies can be fantastically moving: but they can always be formulated, and algorithms abound as to those that can "invent" harmony. I thank my dad for making me listen to this over and over as a child on long car trips - it didn't have the punch or ease of shows that I do love - Pippin, Godspell and other modern musicals. PLus I wanted to hear Genesis. So said, driver picks the tunes, I was not old enough to drive, and though often dad rocked out to WIND AND WUTHERING, a Genesis masterpiece available also here on Apple®'s iTunes® (way way recommended). A couple of decades later and sure enough both albums sound like they were made last week - and I've seen Steve at these shows: he *loves* that people enjoy his work even more now than before - the night I saw him he had a recorder and was laughing at the joy in the art he created: a great sight, just like watching Phil Collins in 1981 watch his own face in part of the drum kit he used on instrumental parts, and my brother and I could see that he was having the best time of anyone in a 15,000 person arena. Metheny, Collins, Sondheim: all stylists yet perfectionists who played and practiced, to my knowledge, Literally, Every waking moment of the day - you cannot be as great as this and not be absolutely obsessed. Melody - that's just a gift. As far as melody, and the sublime, and genius: in its genre, the best ever written. /Ian A Schneider, Esq/

Most would say SWEENEY was his big success but this one truly works on so many levels. By far, it's his most well rounded show thanks to the integration of story and song. How can "Every Day a Little Death" not devistate you?
  • Just tremendous scoring and singing

I was so fortunate to see the original Broadway production with Johns and Cariou and Gingold...fabulous....The album does a GREAT job of capturing the tremendous music....Certainly Sondheim's best, IMHO. (Don't bother with the movie...not even close.)
  • Wonderful Album

This show is incredible, love the score. I just saw Broadway's Penny Fuller star in a regional production of Little Night Music. She was spectacular in "Send in the Clowns".
  • The Finest Broadway Show of the 1970s

After working in the theatre for many years on Broadway as a Singing actor, I can still say that this score is exemplary Sondheim. I felt that way when I first heard it at 13 years old and then when I saw the show (luckily living quite close to NY). Victoria Malloy's rendition of 'Soon' and the song itself, must be one of the most beautiful songs ever written. If you listen to the changes in chord structure that I am quite sure has never been written before...it is obvious that Sondheim is the most prolific Broadway Composer of the 20thC. Liaisons will never be performed again as it was by the great Ms. GinGold but...she manages to give you a feeling for the performance on this recording......Glynis Johns....the perfect Sondheim leading lady...she sings as an actor....she does not act as she sings. This is the only rendition of 'Send in the Clowns' that can truly break your heart.

is the finest musical ever presented on the New York Stage. I saw it within a week of opening in New York and it will remain with me forever. How can music be so brilliant and be coupled with such great poetry. Pure joy.
