  • Five Star Album

This is a five star album that I am giving three stars for the “iTunes” or “Remastered” versions. Very lovely songs like “My Father’s Song”, “Shake Me Wake Me”, “Moanin’ Low”, and “I Never Had It So Good” have lost much of their substance with the overdone (or overemphasized) reverb on these particular mixes. The songs sound very “spacey”. And what’s worse is that Babs voice has been buried somewhat in the mix as compared to the originals. It has been lost somewhere in the mix as opposed to being the focal point of the songs. I would recommend, for a five star experience, listening to the original mixes on vinyl. Or, “ripping” vinyl versions to iTunes (as I have done) to enjoy on the go.

Wow---I had almost completely forgotten how great Barbra's disco-era remake of "Shake Me, Wake" was (is!). Pure 1975 nostalgia...loving every minute of it, all over again! The rest of the album is worth 5-stars too, but this track is a 10 if you're an old-school disco fan!

Her voice is as always excellent. There has not been a better sounding voice since Streisand. Critics... give it up!

This lp was actually critically acclaimed upon it's release. It's the follow-up to the soundtrack from the film "Funny Lady," the sequel to "Funny Girl." Barbra was filming the box-office flop "Up The Sandbox" and a few song from the soundtrack ended up on this lp, the film wasn't a musical and there isn't an official soundtrack. This lp was produced by Rupert Holmes, he of "Pina Colada" fame, he wrote the album's closer, the beautiful "Widescreen." Barbra tried her hand at writing and came up with the haunting "By The Way," not bad but sad really. The title track is a revisit to the world of standards, "Lazy Afternoon" is given a contemporary arrangement and the finished sound is a bit "supernatural." The disco craze was just beginning and Barbra tried her hand at it, although she would find success with this genre a few years later, it wasn't meant to be yet, "Shake Me Wake Me" should have been tossed out, it does not work. The mastering of this cd is just an analog transfer to digital medium, therefore it isn't remastered and none of these sides will be except for the title track, which will find a home on the "Essential Barbra Streisand."
  • A low point in Streisand's recording career

An album most notable perhaps because it mark's Streisand's first attempt with emerging disco on Shake Me, Wake Me. It fails, as does just about everything on this bland and boring release - probably the weakest in the great singer's impressive career catalogue. There are no hit singles here. There is really no track that remains vital and essential when counting among the best from a truly great artist.

This album is so perfect. Its title reflects the brilliance of a Lazy Afternoon. It has a emotion that you can only feel when at ones leisure. Barbra Streisand is dead on as usal!!
