Favorite rock album in years
If you hoped they would expand on Joy As An Act Of Resistance songs like Colossus and NFAMWAP, they did. Not only did they become more compositionally and dynamically diverse, they have also brought in a lower end, a heavier rock sensibility to the formula. The guitar tones on this would make Kurt Cobain proud. Easily their noisiest release to date.
From War to Danke there really aren’t any weak songs. In fact, I feel like the album stands way better as a front to back 40 minute experience, rather than individual singles.
It is relentlessly aggressive over those 40 minutes, but as a result A Hymn really stands out as a gorgeous, deserved break before the final assault. Ultra Mono is an amazing exercise in minimalism, invention, and creativity. Like the message or not, these guys rock balls. For context regarding the messaging, I highly recommend the recent NME cover piece on why they are so unpopular in the UK due to their “sloganeering,” as the band calls it.
Usually this is where I’d say what other bands it sounds like, .... okay here goes. Kinda sounds like the Clash covering Drive Like Jehu and The Dead Kennedys.🤷♂️If you like loud noisy rock, and are on board with DK’s politics, this one is just for you. Enjoy!!!!
