  • Not Too Bad

Almost passed on this based on several really bad reviews but I'm glad I didn't. It isn't the old school Opeth of course, but I'd say it's the best since Heritage.

Yes there’s no more death metal hardcore growling but the clean vocals are amazing in itself. This is a good album.

So, I love Opeth / seen them at least a dozen times and have tickets to the Apollo Theatre NYC show upcoming.... I've read all the reviews and I understand and agree with everyone who is "on the fence" with the last 2-3 albums. Forget hoping for "growling" hard / heavy albums, although, I'd welcome it at this point! And it would probably bring back many fans, but that's what prog bands are...progressive. And they're not giving in to what fans want, except in concert, which is why you should still buy a ticket to their shows. I have listened to this album twice and of course it has it's great moments and killer Fredrik solo's, which are repetitive at this point, but there's just no "standout" track, like "Burden" or even some chunks of songs off Pale Communion. Heritage was unique, Sorceress, I haven't given enough listens, but that album and this new one have very complex / repeated listens needed to appreciate, tracks. As others have said, yes, I'll always buy / listen to their albums soon after release date, but they just seem to be fading away in a weird way while still producing great music. It's just really hard to give this album 4-5 stars. A few parts were great, including the final track. Why does Damnation stand out so incredibly?, yet these last few albums don't? My Arms, Your Heasre ('98), Still Life ('99), Orchid ('94) and Morningrise ('96) were legendary... especially the non-screaming songs like Benighted, Credence, To Bid You Farewell and Face of Melinda.

I instantly liked Heart in Hand complex, melodic, 8+ minutes long, with a beautiful ending. I'm glad for the clean vocals, because I'm getting really tired of growling. UPDATE: Nov 10 2019, I do think this may be my favorite Opeth album of all time and career. I am amazed at some of the reviewers that don't like this, I mean, respecting individual opinions, this album is bursting with so much clever creativity, non-traditional melodies, and different rhythms I can only think some of the negativity just comes from not giving this album a fair chance. Yes, I like a few songs instantly, but most took some time to grow on me. Time will tell if this will rise to my favorite or not, but as I listen more its star keeps rising since the Sept 27 release date.

I just hope they keep making albums well into the future. They are prolific so we should get something regularly. M. A. is a musical genius!

Opeth is an absolute phenomenal musical anomaly. With that said, I just don’t get this one.. lazy at best. I embrace the new sound 5 Album's ago, can’t growl forever kids! The Segway from crunching metal to the new Prog was outstanding. This new album just does not have it, pains me to say cuz I love this band! Next time!

This latest experiment from Opeth couldn't be a bigger disappointment for me. Everything that made Opeth special to me has been discarded in some failed attempt to sound like a 70's prog-rock band. MA should have changed the name of the band several albums ago because Opeth the metal band is no more. I love jazz, I love prog-rock, I love metal, but I hate this. It has no passion, no dynamics, and now Opeth has no me.
  • Yikes.

What started as a cool prog experiment with Heritage has mutated into this confused prog monstrosity. It seems like opeth wanted to write the most obscure album with bizarre and “challenging” melodies, but it all sounds very twisted, and not in a good way. Some of the songs are downright silly. I get the haunted house vintage antique gothic aesthetic , but the execution is just off. This might be their worst album.
