If this was just your basic R&B song about love or having fun, I would say that the beat, sound, and vocals lay out an outstanding groove. However, this is Mississippi Goddam about the evils of a racists Mississippi--the site of the lynching of Emmett Till and the assasination of WWII vet and NAACP organizer Medgar Evers. This song cries out for indignation and anger. I'm sure Andra Day knows the context of the lyrics, so I'm baffled by her choice of tone. I guess it is suppose to be ironic or sarcastic and I'm too literal to understand it. Anyway, download the tune to enjoy its beauty; just don't remember that it is Nina's civil rights anthem.

First and foremost, "Mississippi Goddamn" is one of my all-time favorite songs by Nina Simone, and Andra Day is one of my favorite new vocalists. I was, therefore 'disappointed' by this version of the song. I fully appreciate, that Ms. Day is an amazing vocal stylist, with an amazing voice. Perhaps, I could be more impressed by/appreciative of Ms. Day's presentation of this awesome, and (sadly) still relevant song, if I was not so familiar with and dedicated to Ms. Simone's rendition. Still, I give Ms. Day 3 stars for her creative rendition, and that she did not attempt to 'mimic' Nina's -- both are amazing, phenomenal artists! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
